The 5 Benefits of Playing Golf
“Golf is the closest game to the game we call life. You get bad breaks from good shots. You get good breaks from bad shots – but you have to play the ball where it lies.”
Bobby Jones
Golf traces back to 100 BC, when the Romans played paganica, in which players used a bent stick to hit a stuffed leather ball. The actual game of golf itself originates from the outskirts of Edinburgh, where players would attempt to hit a pebble over sand dunes and around tracks using a bent club. The nation’s enthusiastic pursuit of golf led citizens to neglect their military training. The consequences were so bad that the Scottish Parliament of King James II banned the sport in 1457. Despite people ignoring the ban, it was only in 1502 that the game obtained Parliamentary approval when King James IV of Scotland became the world’s first golfing monarch.
To this date, golf is one of the oldest and most enjoyed games around. Golf is a sport for everyone; you get to spend a day with friends, feel the sunshine on your face all whilst you complete a challenge. In the UK, golf is one of the more popular sports to play. In all of Europe, England has the highest number of registered golf courses with a total of 2,500 followed by Germany with just 727.
With regards to the number of registered golf players, England is also ahead of Europe, with over 2 million people in England playing golf at least twice a month.
